Biography

Wesley George (b. 2000, London) is a self-taught British artist of Vincentian and English heritage, known for his naturalistic portraits that celebrate Black British identity, with a focus on the Caribbean British experience. Drawing primarily from friends and community in London, George’s work presents his sitters against bold, block-coloured backgrounds, capturing individuality and narrative through an engaging visual syntax. Inspired by mid to late 20th-century photography, his portraits reflect his personal exploration of cultural heritage, spotlighting the often-overlooked layers of history and culture that shape Black British life.

George’s work incorporates elements of urban culture, including timeless garments, symbols of reggae, and sound system culture, paying homage to the dynamic legacy of Caribbean influence within British society. His balance of tradition and modernity creates a compelling lens on heritage, individuality, and identity. In turn, his work invites viewers to reflect on the lives and stories of the people around them, seeing heritage as an enduring part of our shared landscape.

George first came to public attention in 2020, when he was selected for JD Malat Gallery’s post-lockdown open-call exhibition, Isolation Mastered, where he was voted among the top artists. In 2021, he was featured in the TV series Next Big Thing. Since then, he has continued to exhibit widely, including a 2023 solo show, Everyday People, at Canopy by Hilton, and several exhibitions with Saatchi Gallery.
